Community Law Enforcement Academy

NOTE: This academy is not for law enforcement certification. It is offered for educational purposes only. There is no guarantee of employment within the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office upon completion of this course.

On behalf of Sheriff Donald F. Eslinger, we thank you for your interest in the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office. The Community Law Enforcement Academy is designed to educate the citizens of Seminole County in the concepts and procedures of law enforcement. We meet each Wednesday evening for 14 weeks from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. There are no physical requirements and it’s a free course of instruction taught by members of the Command Staff, Deputy Sheriffs, and staff from the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

COURSE SUMMARY

As a result of a complete re-engineering of the Academy and studying the instructor and course evaluations from the past, we have implemented the largest restructuring of course material in the last ten years. The course begins with an introduction by Sheriff Donald F. Eslinger and Chief Deputy Steve Harriett. This is followed by presentations on Law Enforcement Training, Seminole Neighborhood Policing (SNP), Traffic (students will be offered the opportunity to drive golf carts wearing fatal vision goggles which simulate various degrees of impairment), Investigations, Special Operations, Forensic Services, and Crime Prevention just to name a few. In addition to the hands on instruction of the many facets of the Sheriff’s Office, students will also be involved in a mock homicide scenario throughout the course. During the scenario, students will see the inner workings of investigations and will get an in depth look at Forensic Services to include a walkthrough of the Forensics Services Laboratory. Students will participate in hands on instruction as it pertains to crime scene processing, latent processing, gunshot residue, Alternate Light Source, Laser Trajectory Analysis, and Blood Splatter Analysis. It will be up to participating students to solve the mock homicide based upon their experiences and evidence collected throughout the course. The mock scenario will conclude at the State Attorney Office where students will get to participate in a mock trial with members of the Sheriff’s Office and State Attorney’s Office.
In addition to hands on instruction, there will be several tours available as apart of the course. During the academy, students will be able to tour the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, Juvenile Enforcement Center, and Special Operations section (which includes demonstrations from S.W.A.T., Aviation, Range & Water, K9, and E.O.D.).
Additionally, students will be offered the opportunity to participate in ride-a-longs with a uniformed Deputy Sheriff, fire Sheriff's Office weapons at the gun range, and drive a patrol car in similar conditions that Deputies are trained in.
