Compute Safe Internet Class  

This FREE Internet safety initiative is offered through the Community Services Division's Crime Prevention Unit. Compute Safe is a computer and internet safety initiative that offers a series of two and a half hour hands-on classes covering a variety of topics relating to online safety for children and adults, computer fraud prevention and computer security. Sheriff's Office representatives will facilitate these classes which are held at the District 2 Community Service Center of the Sheriff's Office located at 3822 S. Orlando Drive, Sanford, (407) 665-6620. Classes are conducted on an as needed basis depending on the number of registrants and are limited to ten registrants. Applicants will be accepted on a first come-first serve basis. If you wish, you may complete your registration online, contact Margaret Levins at 407.665.6748, or by fax to 407.665.6658. A criminal history background check will be completed on all applicants.

Sexual Exploitation of Children Online

This class will help provide caregivers with an understanding of: The location of vulnerable areas online for children and teens; the grooming process that the computer sex offender uses to gain access to victims; new technologies and latest trends that may put children at risk; software and hardware tools for caregivers; and searching your computer.

Computer Frauds and Scams

More and more people of all ages are surfing the net and making purchases online. Increased usage of Internet services also increases the chances that online users may become a victim of a fraud, scam or Identity Theft. This class will cover the most common frauds and scams perpetrated online. Computer users will also understand how personal information may be comprised online; what steps they must take to protect their personal and financial information and what to do if they become a victim.

Computer Security

Every new computer technology that is introduced brings with it new challenges to the average computer user. Not understanding how to secure a computer network, whether it is wireless or otherwise, may put the user at risk to viruses, worms and network intrusions and malware. Computer users will learn about: new types of computer crime that target unsecured computers; signs of computer trouble; password protection; and the basics of securing computers.

"Do You Have A Space On Myspace?"

This one hour PTA and community presentation is designed to educate parents and caregivers on the features of social networking sites, how these sites may used by sexual offenders to prey on children and teens, and what measures may be taken to reduce the vulnerability of children on these sites.

Internet Safety: Grades 3 through High School

Children and teens are provided information on the many valuable resources available online. The following topics are also discussed; cyber-bullying, risky online behavior, postings of personal information, tips on what to do if confronted with uncomfortable or inappropriate material; reporting illegal or inappropriate situations; music downloading, and internet safety tips.
