On Tuesday, August 3, 2010, neighborhoods throughout Seminole County are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “26th Annual National Night Out” (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.
National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and community partnerships as well as send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
From 6pm to 10pm on August 3, 2010, residents in neighborhoods throughout Seminole County and across the nation are being asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors, Sheriff’s Office Deputies and personnel. Many neighborhoods throughout Seminole County will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities and anti-crime rallies. Representatives from the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office will be visiting neighborhoods throughout the county on this night.
In order to better facilitate these visits, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office is asking neighborhoods within the unincorporated areas of Seminole County (those areas not within a city jurisdiction), to register for a National Night Out visit by Sheriff’s Office personnel. Please click on Register and be sure to include the following information within the email request; name of Subdivision; Contact name; Contact phone number; Time and duration of event; and Email address. Your email request will be answered with a confirmation within 72 hours.
For more information on the History of National Night Out and on the National Association of Town Watch, please click here. Residents are encouraged to also register with the National Association of Town Watch so that they may receive an “Organizational Kit” filled with “how to” materials, such as promotional ideas, guidelines, tips, questions and answers, camera-ready art, and sample news releases and proclamations.
Crimes will occur where the opportunities exist. If you remove the criminal's opportunity to commit a crime, your chances of becoming a victim decrease. Neighborhoods that work together and help establish partnerships with law enforcement to fight crime see a big reduction in the incidents of crimes in their communities. These initiatives can help your community be as safe and secure as you want it to be.
